Long before acrylic emulsion existed, Indian buildings were finished in lime, and many of those walls are still standing, still breathing, and still beautiful. Lime plaster is now returning to premium homes not as nostalgia but because it solves problems modern paint creates, especially in Mumbai's humidity and Pune's older building stock.
The breathability advantage
Conventional plastic paint forms a sealed film. When moisture enters a wall, from monsoon-saturated exteriors, plumbing, or simply humid air, that film traps it, and the result is the blistering, peeling, and damp patches every Mumbai resident recognises. Lime is vapour-open: the wall absorbs and releases moisture naturally, drying outward instead of failing.
Healthier walls, measurably
Lime is naturally alkaline, which makes it inhospitable to mould, and genuine lime systems are effectively zero-VOC. What to expect during application
Lime rewards patience. A typical room takes three to five days depending on the system and the wall's starting condition.

- Dust gently and wipe with a barely damp soft cloth. Avoid detergents and scrubbing. Small marks can often be refreshed with a light limewash pass.
- Is lime plaster more expensive than paint?
- Per square foot, yes, since it is a multi-coat hand-applied system. But it ages by developing character rather than failing, so its cost over a decade often compares favourably.
